NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a vital molecule in the body that participates in energy production, metabolism, longevity and anti-aging processes. While calorie restriction and fasting can boost NAD levels, a ketogenic diet also effectively increases NAD by enhancing the citric acid cycle.
A ketogenic diet induces a metabolic state called ketosis, where the body shifts from using glucose to using ketones for energy. This metabolic switch not only elevates NAD levels but also improves brain energy metabolism and reduces inflammation, offering potential benefits for overall health and longevity.
Ketones are fatty acids produced in the body. They provide an alternative energy source for the brain in oppose to glucose. They're particularly beneficial in conditions where glucose levels in the blood are low, such as during fasting or intense exercise. Impaired brain glucose metabolism (hypometabolism) is also seen in Alzheimer’s disease. Ketones, especially beta-hydroxybutyrate, enhance brain energy metabolism, reduce inflammation, and help mitigate the effects of neurodegenerative diseases.
Nutritional ketosis is achieved through a ketogenic diet, whereas exogenous ketones are obtained from supplements. Both forms offer benefits, but their applications can vary depending on individual needs and health goals.
Acute ketosis, achieved via fasting or exogenous ketones, can improve mental clarity and focus, especially under stress or sleep deprivation. This makes ketones a valuable tool for those experiencing brain fog or seeking cognitive enhancement.
One way to induce a ketogenic state is a ketogenic diet, but it's hard. To harness the benefits of ketones without committing to a full ketogenic diet, consider a low-carb, whole-foods diet, such as a low-carb Mediterranean diet. Then, incorporate medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) into meals and consider using ketone salts or esters for immediate benefits. These are supplements that can be bought in almost any supplement store. Look for C8 oil or MCT oil.

Metformin, commonly used for type 2 diabetes, helps lower blood glucose and reduce inflammation but acts as a mild mitochondrial toxin. While it can reduce cancer risk and enhance metabolic health, its use should be carefully monitored.
